SUPPORTING HEALTHY SCHOOLS

In partnership with Kenya’s Ministry of Education, we support resource-poor primary schools in our School Network as they work to address critical barriers to learning, such as the lack of access to basic resources, by launching School Meals Programs and investing in Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) infrastructure.

SCHOOL MEALS

By introducing School Meals Programs centered on the delivery of a warm daily meal for every student, we are addressing the most significant barrier to learning in our rural district — hunger.

THE NEED:

The majority of children in our community do not bring food to school and the underserved schools in our district lack the capacity to introduce affordable, sustainable School Meals Programs. Without access to food during the school day, students struggle to concentrate, fall behind, and in many cases, are forced to leave school in search of work.

OUR APPROACH:

Through the launch of School Meals Programs, scaffolded by investments in the construction of eco-friendly kitchens, we are reducing hunger as a barrier to learning and strengthening an infrastructure for student health. The core objectives of our Girls United Program include:

  • Reduced instances of hunger as a barrier for student learning

  • Optimized student enrollment, attendance, and educational outcomes

  • Increased student engagement with learning

  • Strengthened school capacity to support and address student health

  • Strengthened hunger-related safety nets for families

WATER, SANITATION, AND HYGIENE (WASH)

We invest in clean water systems, latrines, and hand-washing stations to create healthy school environments and provide improved facilities to ensure all students can access clean water and safe sanitation facilities.

THE NEED:

Access to proper sanitation infrastructure and resources continues to be a challenge across Kenya. It is estimated that more than 40% of Kenyans lack access to clear water, and the Ministry of Health reports that 1 in 3 schools across the country lack access to safe and accessible drinking water and half of all schools lack adequate sanitation infrastructure – a number that is significantly higher in rural areas.

OUR APPROACH:

By investing in quality WASH infrastructure at underserved public primary schools, we are nurturing the health and well-being of children and providing a critical foundation for students to come to school, stay in school, and thrive in school. The core objectives of our WASH Program include:

  • Improved practices for safe food preparation

  • Improved hand washing and hygiene practices by students

  • Increased health and hygiene awareness
