Our Integrative
Programs

The Need

In rural Kenya, young adolescent girls (ages 10 – 14) are uniquely vulnerable. At a critical time for their physical and socio-emotional development, and an age where they are exposed to increased risks to their rights and well-being, girls in primary school face challenges that threaten their health, education, and futures, including gender-based violence, gender inequity, and lack of knowledge on sexual and reproductive health.

There are 1.13 million out-of-school children in Kenya between the ages of 6 and 13, a significant majority of whom are girls. While 80% of girls in rural Kenya attend primary school, only 50% of them enroll in secondary school. Even fewer enroll and complete tertiary education.

Our Approach

Our integrative approach seeks to remove barriers to learning for all students and ensure that girls have access to the knowledge, resources, and support they need to stay in school and make informed choices about their bodies, their education, and their futures.

Flying Kites School Network

In collaboration with Kenya’s Ministry of Education, we partner with underserved primary schools in rural Kenya (collectively, the “Flying Kites School Network”) as they work to raise the level of education they provide and ensure that their students are engaged and supported. Through these engagements with primary school teachers and their school leadership, we deliver and monitor our five integrative initiatives: Girls Education & Leadership, School Meals, Clean Water & Sanitation, Trained & Equipped Teachers, Safe & Inclusive Classrooms, and Gender-Based Violence Prevention.

Trained & Equipped Teachers Our Integrative Programs

Trained & Equipped Teachers

Through our Teacher Training Center, we are building the capacity of teachers to create gender-equitable classrooms and enhance student learning. Through the lens of digital literacy, we support teachers to develop the 21st century skills they need to create and deliver engaging lesson plans, monitor student outcomes, and access online resources for self-directed professional development.
Safe & Inclusive Classrooms Our Integrative Programs

Safe & Inclusive Classrooms

We partner with primary school teachers and Child Protection Volunteers to create gender-equitable classrooms and to strengthen safety and inclusivity within primary schools. We conduct Gender Equity Trainings for leaders across our 9 Network schools. Using components of USAID’s Doorways Training Program, we train primary school teachers and Child Protection Volunteers to introduce concepts of gender equity, discuss beliefs, and examine gender roles.
Gender-Based Violence Prevention Our Integrative Programs

Gender-Based Violence Prevention

We train primary school teachers and Child Protection Volunteers to respond to and prevent gender-based violence and to support girls who have experienced gender-based violence. By working in partnership with schools, teachers, students, and our community, we ensure that all stakeholders work to tackle gender-based violence and to create safe and supportive learning environments for all girls.

Flying Kites Academy

In 2007, Flying Kites opened the doors to our primary school, Flying Kites Academy, to address the vast inequities in access to quality education for children in our community. Today, the Flying Kites Teacher Training Center & Academy serves as a community-centered resource for innovation and capacity building for educators across our School Network and beyond. Here, we design, pilot, and scale programs that remove barriers to learning, alleviate health disparities, increase gender equality, and build the capacity of teachers.
