In rural Kenya, young adolescent girls (ages 10 – 14) are uniquely vulnerable. At a critical time for their physical and socio-emotional development, and an age where they are exposed to increased risks to their rights and well-being, girls in primary school face challenges that threaten their health, education, and futures, including gender-based violence, gender inequity, and lack of knowledge on sexual and reproductive health.

The Need
Our Approach
Our integrative approach seeks to remove barriers to learning for all students and ensure that girls have access to the knowledge, resources, and support they need to stay in school and make informed choices about their bodies, their education, and their futures.
Flying Kites School Network
In collaboration with Kenya’s Ministry of Education, we partner with underserved primary schools in rural Kenya (collectively, the “Flying Kites School Network”) as they work to raise the level of education they provide and ensure that their students are engaged and supported. Through these engagements with primary school teachers and their school leadership, we deliver and monitor our five integrative initiatives: Girls Education & Leadership, School Meals, Clean Water & Sanitation, Trained & Equipped Teachers, Safe & Inclusive Classrooms, and Gender-Based Violence Prevention.
Flying Kites Academy
In 2007, Flying Kites opened the doors to our primary school, Flying Kites Academy, to address the vast inequities in access to quality education for children in our community. Today, the Flying Kites Teacher Training Center & Academy serves as a community-centered resource for innovation and capacity building for educators across our School Network and beyond. Here, we design, pilot, and scale programs that remove barriers to learning, alleviate health disparities, increase gender equality, and build the capacity of teachers.
